Now that 2018 is almost over, I thought it was time to take a look at some new apps that came out this year that we may have missed. Here are a few for Apple and Android:
Apple Apps:
Tab – This app actually figures out a bill at a restaurant by divvying up what everyone owes. You take a picture of the receipt, assign items to each person, and it will figure out the tax/tip (divided evenly) and gives a total to everyone! It’s free!
Otter Voice Notes – This app creates “smart notes” while you are in the classroom or meeting. It records live conversations, transcribes them and can differentiate between voices for organization and accuracy. It’s free (and sounds amazing!)
1Password – 1Password’s new mobile version syncs with the desktop app to help keep your accounts safe by creating and storing a different secure password for all the services you use. You only have to remember one password. It’s free!
Android Apps:
Waze – If you are going on a road trip or visiting a crowded city, use Waze for your navigation. The app uses its community of users for info on traffic jams, speed traps and closures. It’s free!
VSCO – This is a great photo editor for all those pictures on your phone. It includes a large selection of presets and tools. It’s free!
Podcast Addict – Android does not come with a built in podcast app like iOS does, but there are plenty out there for downloading. This one works well and is free!

Privacy settings to change in Windows 10
While I pride myself on a clean, safe computer, in today’s world it is smart to protect your privacy as much as possible. Here are a couple settings to change on your Windows 10 computer:
Turn off access to your location – There are many time with a mobile phone or laptop that allowing access to your location can be helpful, but if you are using a stationary desktop, change this! If you are using a laptop, it can be turned off and on. The steps are: Settings – Privacy – Location – use the change button and toggle it off. If an app is using your location, you will see an icon of a circle with a black dot in it.
Turn off your advertising ID – Each Microsoft account has a unique advertising ID that lets the company collect information about you and deliver a personalized ad experience across different platforms. If you sign into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, those personalized ads will follow you onto your computer — you’ll see them in apps and possibly in the operating system itself (in the Start menu, for example). The steps are: Settings – Privacy – General – toggle off “Let apps use advertising ID to make ads more interesting to you based on your app usage. (Pretty sneaky that this is there in the first place!)
