Tip of the month

Avoiding PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs)

When I receive a call about annoying pop ups or slowness on a computer, the issue often turns out to be caused by what is called a “PUP”.  These are the sneaky little programs that get installed on your computer when you don’t realize it.  Here are a couple of tips to avoid these problems:

  • Pay really close attention when you are installing an update or a new program that you have downloaded.  READ what is happening and uncheck the “Standard” installation and choose the “Custom” one.
  • Occasionally you’ll see a screen during the installation wizard that asks you to “Accept” an option.  This is especially true if they are trying to persuade you to donate to a cause.  The “I do not accept” option may look like it is grayed out, but point your mouse there anyway.  Chances are it just looks like you can’t choose it.

Siri tip

Open an app: You can’t use Siri to control a third party app (like Angry Birds), but you can at least tell it to open the app for you.  Hold down the button and when asked what you want, say “Open the calendar” and it will do it!
